 PROGRAM OVERVIEW   study in america

The School of Business at the University of Connecticut (UConn) offers full-time, in-residence PhD programs in accounting, finance, management, marketing and OPIM (operations management, management information systems or a combination of the two). The PhD program is accredited by AACSB International-The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and prepares students to conduct high quality, modern research, and to assume faculty positions at leading universities. This program is designed for superior students who are highly committed to scholarly research and teaching.

All PhD students are assigned an adviser in their concentration upon admittance. Over the course of their program, students must complete a minimum of 37 credits of course work (accounting requires a minimum of 49 credits and marketing requires a minimum of 40 credits); a qualifying research paper; a comprehensive general examination; and a dissertation.

The Accounting concentration emphasizes economics-based research addressing a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, the relation between accounting information and stock prices, the prevalence and measurement of earnings management activity, the role of external auditors in the financial reporting process, the effect of taxes on firms' business decisions and asset prices, and the intersection of financial and tax accounting. Graduates have accepted positions at Bentley College, California State University - Los Angeles, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Fordham, George Mason, Northeastern and Villanova, and the Universities of Georgia, Massachusetts, Nevada-Reno, SUNY-Albany, Rhode Island, Rutgers and Wisconsin.

The Department of Finance allows doctoral students to specialize their skills in corporate or business finance, financial management in government and not-for-profit organizations, financial planning, investments, banking, insurance, real estate, public accounting and health systems. Graduates have been hired at the Universities of Utah, Georgia, Texas Christian, Fairfield, North Carolina (Charlotte), Illinois (Chicago), Toledo, North Texas, Depaul, Hofstra, and Bangkok University.

The Management PhD Program has two broad areas of focus, organizational behavior and strategic management, and one specific area of specialization that bridges these two areas of focus, entrepreneurship, in which the Management Department has built a core competency and international research reputation. Research on organizational behavior examines issues pertaining to the attraction, retention, management, and performance of people in organizations that arise at the individual, interpersonal, group, and organizational levels. Research on strategic management examines issues pertaining to the establishment and implementation of a strategic direction for the organization that is compatible with its external environment. Research on entrepreneurship examines issues pertaining to the creation of new firms that provide new products and services for the market; entrepreneurship is at the heart of sustainable regional and national growth as well as organizational performance. Graduates have accepted faculty positions at institutions such as Arizona State University, Central Connecticut State, Colorado State University, Iowa State, Northeastern University, Oregon State University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The Marketing concentration in the PhD program has two broad areas of focus, behavioral consumer research and the modeling of marketing phenomena, with the joint goal of enhancing the development of marketing intelligence and the practice of customer relationship marketing. Research topics related to the modeling of marketing phenomena include one-to-one marketing; customer relationship management, cross-category and cross-media marketing, empirical analysis of strategic firm behavior, network effects, pricing, and empirical industrial organization. Recent graduates have accepted faculty positions at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Georgia State University, Baylor University, Drexel University, Mississippi State University, Kent University, University of South Carolina, and Texas Tech University.

Operations and Information Management (OPIM)
